Nearly 77,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year.Exposure to UV radiation is the leading risk factor for skin cancer, yet millions of teens and young women are flocking to tanning bed facilities and beaches or pools to tan every year.

At current rates, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Approximately 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma, and the incidence of melanoma has been rising for at least 30 years particularly among young, white women in most recent years.

What is Melanoma

Melanomais a malignanttumor of melanocytes. Melanocytes produce the dark pigment, melanin, which is responsible for the color of skin. These cells predominantly occur in skin, but are also found in other parts of the body, including the bowel and the eye.Melanoma can originate in any part of the body that contains melanocytes.

Melanoma is much more dangerous if it is not found in the early stages. It causes the majority 75% of deaths related to skin cancer. Worldwide, doctors diagnose about 160,000 new cases of melanoma yearly.

American Academy of Dermatology

To raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, and to encourage early detection through self-exams, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday®.

On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. In 2014, it is estimated that 9,710 deaths will be attributed to melanoma.

Melanoma is the most common cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.

When caught early, skin cancer, including melanoma, is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent.
